In which John tries to think about whether anything matters in the grand scheme of things, and whether anything matters.
Pizzamas starts next week! This ridiculous beard will finally be freed to do its essential work in the world. http://pizzamas.com

ONLY CHRIST JESUS MAKES LIFE MEANINGFUL! THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO MEANING TO LIFE OUTSIDE OF A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM! THE INFALLIBLE WORD OF GOD STATES: I CORINTHIANS 15:17 "IF CHRIST HAD NOT BEEN RAISED, YOUR FAITH IS FUTILE AND YOU ARE STILL ON YOUR SINS"! MEANING IN LIFE COMES "ONLY THRU ASKING THE LORD JESUS CHRIST INTO YOUR LIFE, ASKING FORGIVENESS FOR YOUR SINS, AND RECEIVING JESUS AS LORD AND SAVIOR"! NOTHING, BUT NOTHING ELSE CAN SAVE YOU FROM AN ETERNAL HELL FIRE! 😢

‘I Can’t Be Arsed’ by Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer. Cheery nihilism for those days when it’s all too much.

Nihilism is severely misunderstood. It’s not an excuse to indulge in meaninglessness. It’s an invitation to meaning.

Cyanobacteria here. Lemme tell you, back in the pre-Cambrian the kids were all nihilistic, too. Tired of hearing us old oxygen-passers go on about how the ocean wasn’t as green as when we were young. Shoulda seen them oceans! Anyway, the youth of that day felt like everything was old hat — and we didn’t even have hats back then wish we did. I think they all planned to just hang out on the beach in Australia — I mean, this was before Australia (the continent not just the country) but they figured there’d be something like that and I guess they did end up on that beach. Now all that iron we used to swim in rusted out with our burps and… whatever and sank to the bottom of the ocean and I guess some later bunch of organisms will dig them up after they uplift and make swords and bombs out of it; and cars and planes and scalpels and knitting needles. You keep the faith. Like I always say, you gotta make hay while the sun hasn’t yet absorbed you in a searing, boiling cauldron. Right? Course, this was before hay, but you know what I mean.

How about some optimistic nihilist food for thought:
    1. Believing in meaning comes with fear. Fear of rejection, fear of missing out, fear of abandonment, of inadequacy, etc. If you acknowledge things are void of meaning, you live in a perpetual state of acceptance, similar to stoicism.
    2. “My meaning is truer than yours”. Meaning causes conflict when there’s disagreement. Acknowledgment of “meaning”as an arbitrary human construct will easily deescalate conflicting ideas, as long as both sides can agree on subjectivity as a premise.
Edit: #2 is generally known as “tolerance”.

Hi John, I've been feeling hopeless lately and just remembered this video of yours. And I know that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have… But yeah, thank you for always reminding me that it matters. ❤ Big hugs

I personally prefer to have what is reffered to as "Optimistic Nihilism".

Nihilism in the sense that i still believe that in the end nothing matters,

But if nothing matters, than everything matters equally. And you can choose what matters most.

I’ve always been agnostic, but that didn’t translate to nihilism.

Today, I’m embracing nihilism. There’s freedom in it. Half of the country I love voted for intolerance, bigotry, and facism. If that’s not reason to give up, I don’t know what it.

Nothing matters. Hope, acceptance, inclusion, progress, are all just abstract concepts that have no place in this world.

i do not even understand how nihilism leads to despare in the first place though. if there was one thing that nihilisme should get us to, it is the ability to say "ok, cool. and then" to despair. and to hope too, because nihilism, but you get the gist of it.
moreover, meaninglessness, in absolute, does not forbid us to make stuff important for us though :')

  • @Fuckpeople999

    02/19/2025 - 5:39 PM

Everyone in these comments only cemented why nihilism is true, everyone just wants to hear what makes them feel better and boast their ego. Nihilism calls you to understand yourself and understand that it is inherently meaningless and there’s still meaning in that. So it will never be parted bliss or woe, it is a grey area and humans cannot seem to live in grey but only in black and white, and when mixed it creates grey, but people like you do not understand this.

  • @CharCrow1

    02/19/2025 - 5:39 PM

I'm definitely Nihilist, but there are so many different viewpoints of nihilism. I believe nothing ever matters, except the fact we are conscious. Does anything we do matter? I don't think so, does anything in the universe ever matter? no because nothing is going to end it. Is this probably contradictory? yes but every single thing in human nature is contradictory so I don't care that much. In short, nothing will ever matter to anyone and anything but ourselves, because we are conscious.

One thing you said, about the sun 🌞 Actually it will boil the oceans away millions of years prior to becoming a red giant. Unfortunately still hundreds and hundreds of millions of years away. But still before it's red giant phase.
