British physicist Brian Cox is challenged by the presenter of Radio 4’s ‘Life Scientific’, Jim Al-Khalili, to explain the rules of quantum mechanics in just a minute. Brian succeeds; while conceding that the idea that everything is inherently probabilistic, is challenging. Even Einstein found it difficult.

When you use expressions like "assign a probability" that means nothing to the average person. That clears up nothing.

Right that lost me, there must be a simpler version say 15 seconds.

It took him only 60 seconds to explain, but I guess I need more than 60 days to understand

Brian Cox does an excellent job summarizing quantum mechanics so succinctly! It's fascinating how particles can exist in multiple states until observed. For those interested in diving deeper into such mind-bending concepts, I'll soon be discussing the Simulation Hypothesis and its connection to quantum mechanics. Let's continue exploring the wonders of physics! 🌌🧑‍🏫

60 seconds proves he is fast at explaining very complicated theories? Id rather hear the longer version…..

Amazing. Taking nothing away from BC but Feynman’s ‘hopping’ got him across the line with time to spare! What an amazing thing to find. Every layperson who causes real scientists to suffer by opining about quantum physics should watch this. I’m not a scientist. I want to take this opportunity to apologize on behalf of the public for the many hunches we’ve had that lead to so many outlandish comments. Still… I somehow wonder if quantum consciousness could help us “share dreams”…

Blame it on Hawking. You’re hardly a member of the reading public if you don’t have some kind of view on the math of black holes and ‘the cosmic background radiation’.

Please, another minute to explain what is a particle. I've also heard that particles are not real, they just represent a momentary perturbation amongst waves. Certainly, our attempts to make measurements create havoc by interfering with what we call particles. I enjoy Brian Cox, but I even question whether he understands these things. As if quantum isn't already impossible to understand, well so are concepts like: mass, light, time, and gravity.
